ChatGPT ads show to adults on the Free and Go plans. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) never see them, and neither do people OpenAI thinks are under 18.

What this means for advertisers
You are reaching the free audience. That is most ChatGPT users, but not the paying power users who often skew toward work and tech. If your buyer lives inside a company that pays for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, they will not see your ad at work.
Where ads never show, whoever the user is
OpenAI keeps ads away from conversations about health, mental health, politics, self-harm, and a long list of other sensitive topics. Ads also stay out of chats that look emotionally dependent. The full list is on our restricted categories page.
Europe is different
In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, OpenAI does not show personalized ads yet. Ads there are matched to the conversation only, and custom audience lists should not be used.
What advertisers get to see
Very little. OpenAI says advertisers never receive users' chats, memories, names, emails, precise location or IP addresses. You get totals: impressions, clicks, spend and conversions.

Do ChatGPT Plus users see ads?
No. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads.
Do people under 18 see ChatGPT ads?
No. OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it identifies or predicts belong to someone under 18.
Can Free users turn ads off?
Yes. Free users can switch to an Ads-Free mode, but it comes with lower usage limits and fewer features.
Do logged-out users see ads?
OpenAI's help center says ads shown in logged-out experiences are appropriate for all audiences, which suggests they can appear there. Its launch posts described logged-in adults only. Treat it as possible, not confirmed.
Do ads change what ChatGPT answers?
OpenAI says no. Ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape or rank the answer.
